The Hong Kong Marine Department Training Centre, located at the Government Dockyard, provides professional maritime training to departmental officers. It offers traditional lecture rooms fitted with professional audiovisual teaching aids, in addition to various computer-based simulation applications. Premium quality training equipment is essential for providing trainees with realistic simulation environments that allow them to feel and work as if they were on a real ship. Recently the need arose to replace and update some of the original system setups, which had been in use for a very long time, in order for the HKMD to be able to maintain their high training standards.

Media-Go has been a reliable partner of the HKSAR government for many years and helped the government realise a number of prestigious projects in the past, including the Tamar Central Government Complex, the Civil Aviation Department Headquarters and the Hong Kong Police College. They served as the main contractor and systems integrator for the HKMD project, which involved replacing and upgrading the projection and video wall systems of three training bridges and instructor rooms.
One of the most sophisticated installations is a high-end, 270-degree seamless edge blending video wall that simulates a modern ship's bridge. The Hong Kong based AV Stumpfl Wings Vioso specialists Cosmo Pro AV helped with the installation of the impressive 270-degree setup. One of the key challenges of the prestigious project was to deliver a reliable solution for the blending and automatic calibration of the seven projectors that would be used.
The Hong Kong Marine Department was very clear that it wanted a truly user-friendly solution, that would allow for the easy re-alignment of the projector images without the need for complicated and time consuming maintenance procedures. Cosmo Pro AV suggested the use of the latest generation of AV Stumpfl media servers, running Wings Vioso software, which include Vioso's multi camera calibration system for maximum efficiency and image accuracy.
Jason Yeung, Cosmo Pro AV's CTO, explains some of the technological challenges of the project: "The limited projection distance meant that the camera positions were critical for the ship simulator project. Located in the center of the simulator was the control bridge, which partially obstructed the camera views. Ultimately a total of 7 cameras were needed to fully capture each projection image. In the end it all worked beautifully. Thanks to great technology and the support AV Stumpfl and VIOSO, we were able to successfully deliver exactly what Media-Go and the HKMD had envisioned."
Two Wings Engine Stage media servers were used to capture all the image sources from the simulator software, creating one smooth, seamless and synchronized image.
The simulation experience features many scenes that have to realistically portray a variety of real-life scenarios, including the deep black of maritime nights. 7 Barco FL35 projectors were perfectly suited for displaying the visual environments.
The new ship bridge simulator has been seamlessly integrated into the Hong Kong Marine Department Training Centre and is very popular with both trainers and trainees. Hong Kong Marine Department was very satisfied with the upgraded installations and the excellent overall service of Media-Go.
