AV Stumpfl casts black magic on Dutch theatre

Flint turned to BLACKPEAK to achieve a projection screen that blends in with its surroundings and provides an exceptional visual experience.

Wallern a.d. Trattnach (Austria), 22 10 2024 – The Flint theatre, located in the historic centre of Amersfoort, Netherlands, recently upgraded its visual capabilities with the installation of BLACKPEAK, a projection screen from AV Stumpfl’s award-winning BLACKPEAK range.

Opened in 1977, Flint hosts a variety of events from theatrical productions to corporate presentations. The decision to install the projection screen, supplied by AED Display, the exclusive Benelux distributor for AV Stumpfl’sBLACKPEAK screens, was driven by the need to provide an enhanced visual experience for theatre shows, business events, and children’s movie sessions.

“Flint has been our valued customer for many years,” says Carrol van Russel, sales manager of AED Display. “A year ago we introduced BLACKPEAK to the market during a special session, and as soon as the Flint team saw the screen, they were immediately impressed and eager to have it.” The team recognised the screen would blend seamlessly into the theatre’s dark environment while enhancing corporate events and theatre shows.

Jos Houweling, AV specialist at Flint, says: “AED Display provided us with an excellent demo and valuable advice. Their sales pitch made us curious about what the screen could do for us during corporate events and theatre shows.”

According to Houweling, the corporate events market is ever evolving, with visual needs ranging from standard PowerPoint to graphic-rich content featuring high-resolution videos and pictures. This is why the theatre needed a screen surface that could deliver this while also blending in with the surroundings.

The screen was installed in the theatre room, centrally positioned on the stage wall. The installation process was straightforward, explains van Russel: “The team used the frames, stretched the screen and secured it to the frames.” He further praises the frame, stating: “I am convinced they are among the best in the world.”

The 5.08 by 2.94-meter screen has been a major advantage for Flint. Its black design allows it to blend in, ensuring that the focus remains on the performance. “The screen blends seamlessly into the theatre environment. During blackouts and low light show there is no visible white screen on stage; it blends perfectly in with the décor, taking the performances and corporate events to another level,” enthuses Houweling.

Van Russel further highlights the screen’s advantages: “During theatre performances, when the environment is dark, Flint can project onto the BLACKPEAK without any unwanted light reflection. In my view, BLACKPEAK is a game-changer.” Traditional projection screens often suffer from image washout and loss of important details due to ambient light. BLACKPEAK overcomes this challenge by delivering deeper black and more vivid contrasts, ensuring a superior viewing experience.

The adoption of the BLACKPEAK screen has enabled Flint to achieve visual experiences, previously unattainable with a white projection screen.  Van Russel explains: “A white screen reflects a significant amount of ambient light, which can affect the viewing experience. In contrast, a black screen offers superior clarity, with deeper, more accurate black.”

“We are more than happy with the screen and service we received from AED Display and AV Stumpfl,” enthuses Houweling.  “The screen is a real eye catcher - although it blends in perfectly, so sometimes we don’t even see it.”
